Left hotel this morning just after nine to go down the south end of the island and half way up the east coast.
After a few minutes came across a lovely small beach which you don't often come across. Drove down to have a look around, saw that there was a cafe there and a nice place to have a swim. Thought then that we would return there after our trip up the coast and have a late lunch and a swim, which we did very pleasant. Pictures below.
Cafe,Bar where we had lunch
Continued along the coast to Anapala chasm on the east coast to explore which was a fifteen minute walk from the road. Climbed right down these very steep stairs to the bottom at sea level. As you looked up through the high rock you could see a little daylight coming through. Only down there for a few minutes then had to climb all the way back up again.
ANAPALA CHASM
Looking down into the chasm as we walked down the steps with the rope railing.
Looking up from the bottom to daylight above.
Right at the bottom of the chasm at sea level.
As we climbed out of the chasm walked to the edge of the cliff to see the coaston the eastern side. Although it doesn't look it here it is the prevailing wind side and was quite rough and exposed.
Its great the way theses places are set up for the tourist. Concrete or coral steps carved out to make it a little easier. They have rope hand rails which help going down but also good to pull yourself up again out of the chasm as the steps are really steep.
On to the next chasm called Togo. Still on the east coast. This one was really good hard work and a challenge in this heat but we did it. Very interesting. Takes about one and half hours there and back from where you leave your car. Walked through a forest to get to the top of the cliffs . As you come out of the forest you are up high looking out over the ocean. Then the big descent down steps carved over the coral with the rope hand rails down to this great chasm. Before you reach sea level you climb down this huge ladder down to a sandy area with palms growing with the high rock all around. Very hot as not a lot of air. Had a good walk around then climbed the ladder and pulled ourselves up the rope railings over all the coral back through the forest to the car.
We had just come out from walking through the forest from the car now standing at the cliff top about to descend to the chasm
Walking down over the coral. You can see what a great track they have made over the coral with the rope hand rails. It is steeper than it looks.
That small white strip in the middle of the photo is the sand at the bottom of the chasm where we were heading. You can just see the tops of the palm trees that are growing in the sand at the bottom.
TOGO CHASM
We have now reached the top of the ladder that you have to climb down to the bottom.
Nearly at the bottom of the ladder.
Made it, now at sea level in this great sandy area surrounded by high chasm walls made of coral. You can't see out and feel very hemmed in and very hot.
Looking up from the bottom
The ladder we climbed down to get into the deepest part. Now have to climb up to get out.
Climbing back up the ladder. A long way down from where we started at the top of the cliff. Took an hour and a half to get down there and back up to the car.
Very hot but very interesting. Well worth the long climb down. Drank lots of water on this trip. The whole island is coral very grey on this east coast where the prevailing winds come in and rough seas. Where as we are staying on the west coast calm (opposite to home.) The coral all around the hotel is this lovely bright white, would make good white chip for your garden Jen. Shall we bring a truck load back........Drove back around the coast back to the hotel via, as I said earlier the swimming beach which was great to cool us down. Had a burger and chips for lunch before returning back to the hotel and a quiet rest of the day.
Just been for dinner and had a nice seafood basket, yum....
